Blackwell Must Step Aside on Recount

TAKE ACTION TODAY
THERE CAN BE NO HONEST RECOUNT IN OHIO UNLESS SECRETARY OF STATE BLACKWELL STEPS ASIDE

Join the Alliance for Democracy and Common Cause in calling for Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell to step aside from all recount-related procedures. And make sure he knows that you are contacting both Senators from Ohio as well!

If the United States is to be held up as an example of democracy, we cannot allow our elections to be overseen by blatantly partisan officials. Blackwell in Ohio in 2004 reflects the same partisanship as Katherine Harris in Florida in 2000. They both chaired the President's election committee for their state.

We must hold our democracy to the same standards that the Republican leadership has demanded of the Ukraine - no tainted elections.

Senator Richard G. Lugar, Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, is quoted in the New York Times Nov. 23 as saying in reference to the Ukraine elections:

"A concerted and forceful program of election-day fraud and abuse was enacted with either the leadership or cooperation of government authorities."

And Secretary of State Colin Powell had this to say:

"In a blunt statement, Secretary of State Colin L. Powell said today that the United States could not accept as legitimate a declaration by Ukraine's Central Election Commission that Prime Minister Viktor F. Yanukovich was the winner in a presidential election denounced by the opposition as marked by mass fraud." New York Times Nov. 24 on the web

Further the New York Times Nov. 24 notes

"The victory for the prime minister, by a margin of nearly 3 percentage points, that was given in official results diverged sharply from a range of surveys of voters at polling places that gave the opposition as much as an 11-point lead."

Sound familiar? All too familiar we think!

There can be no honest recount in Ohio unless Blackwell steps aside.

Call, then write Blackwell and cc the Ohio Senators by e-mail. Surface mail to Congress does not arrive for many weeks!
