Justice Rising

Justice Rising is the Alliance's flagship publication, a thematic guide for everyone dedicated to ending corporate rule and establishing true democracy. Each edition of Justice Rising examines a single issue, such as food, health care, water, war, and money in politics, and looks at how corporate influence impacts policy and how grassroots groups are achieving people-focused solutions. Naming and Resisting Fascism
We the People Must Organize to Restore a Path to Real Democracy

Picture
Do not go gentle into that good night.  Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
                                                                                                    - Dylan Thomas
And so too must we rage against the dying of our democracy as we mobilize to stop Trump from dismantling our democracy in his ego-driven thrust for absolute power.

The Alliance for Democracy National Council has been grappling with how most accurately to describe and address our alarm regarding the direction President Trump, his cabinet and sycophants have been taking the country.  Fascism seems to best describe the direction in which the country is headed. We need to examine this claim carefully.

Fascism is defined as a nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization which is extremely authoritarian and intolerant, promoting oppressive ideas and behaviors.  This sounds a lot like Trump and his administration.  Today, we are perched on a slippery slope from derogatory name calling to a full-fledged political movement. We must organize to put the brakes on this slide into fascism.
(from the issue introduction by Alliance Council member Ruth Caplan)

Building a New Media Landscape for a Stronger Democracy

Picture
Read the issue online here.

As author/journalist Chris Hedges has written, “The media landscape in the US is collapsing...One-third of the country’s newspapers have shut down and two-thirds of its newspaper journalists have lost jobs since 2005.”

The market-driven mania for big profits has used technology to destroy the media landscape of decades ago. Out of the ruins, a phoenix must rise to create something new, reliable, factual, and accessible to help prevent three looming disasters:
  • The rise of authoritarianism. A "phoenix" media can support a stronger democracy in which the needs and concerns of all people are heard and acted upon.
  • Climate collapse. Information about impacts, causes, and resilience/mitigation strategies can counter propaganda from self-interested corporate elites and politicians.
  • The rise of militarism and a need to end all wars, before violence ruins the peace, safety and security of our lives forever.
This edition of Justice Rising helps begin that process by covering how Wall Street financial and Big Tech corporations killed traditional media. But it also describes the emergence of mission-oriented nonprofit newsrooms, movement journalism, and locally sponsored information sources that are forming the new media landscape. Most critically, multiple articles emphasize the need for all people to become critically media literate to find truth in the media morass.
