Saturday Is the Day—Join a Tax March Near You

From DC to almost everywhere, join a Tax March this Saturday, April 15. Find one near you here—more than 35 events have been added in the 24 hours, so check this listing for the latest information and locations.

These marches are more than just a demand that the 40-year tradition of presidential candidate tax disclosure be continued. It's a call for a fairer tax system as part of a policy shift to promote economic justice and a halt to the growing national divide between haves and have-nots. No more tax cuts for the rich and austerity for the rest of us.

If you march, share photos online with us on Facebook and Twitter, and with @TaxMarch on Twitter using the #TaxMarch hashtag.

We hope to see you out on Saturday, marching for tax justice and disclosure.

Nancy Price & David Delk, Co-Chairs
PS…If you or friends are in Washington, the DC Tax March is in need of volunteers there to ensure the day goes smoothly! Please fill out this form and let organizers know you're able to help.

Could the Local Food campaign take root in Massachusetts?

One ongoing Bay State bone of contention is the strength, or relative lack thereof, of Massachusetts' home rule provisions. One local activist, for instance, who insists that Massachusetts towns and cities have more power than they know, recently said that she had been unable to work with an expert on passing local bylaws to control corporate behavior because he described Massachusetts's home rule as "medieval." Another local activist notes that yeah... we have home rule if the legislature says its ok, but all that cities and towns seem to do with it is changing elected positions to appointed positions.

So if the Local Food Rules campaign moves to Massachusetts, will it thrive? A lot depends on local conditions--for farmers with good access to slaughterhouses or that are comfortable with and able to make a living under existing food inspection rules, the impetus to pass a Local Food and Community Self Governance ordinance is lessened.

But if small farmers feel pressured by too many rules designed to benefit the industrial producers at the expense of local agriculture, we could see action in Massachusetts as well as Maine. It's up to the grassroots to decide!

Welcome Greater Boston Trade Justice!

With the TPP temporarily defeated, the Boston-area activists formerly known as "No TPP Boston" have renamed themselves Greater Boston Trade Justice.

The group will be visible at many upcoming events, including the Tax Day March on April 15, and the March for Science on April 23. Look for them and sign a postcard to Donald Trump demanding that NAFTA be replaced, not renegotiated: No ISDS or investor-state protections, robust and enforceable protections for the environment, climate, workers and food safety, protect and expand "Buy American" provisions.

GBTJ is also planning a town hall forum on NAFTA and immigration in Boston in May, and will be working with a community arts center in Central Massachusetts on a NAFTA talk focusing on the loss of manufacturing jobs in factory and mill towns throughout New England.

The group's "Bad Trade Kills Jobs No TPP" highway banner has been rolled up for now but pictures of their summer standouts have been incorporated in a presentation on US grassroots trade activism which will be given in Germany this spring.
